Henry Heerup (1907-99) worked all through his life with painting, sculpture, etching and drawing. He was not concerned with the need for originality in art, preferring instead to reach a wide public rather than creating superior art for museums. Heerup was a member of the Cobra movement and participated in its exhibitions at Amsterdam in 1949 and at Liège in 1952. Heerup first became famous for his junk sculptures. He created eccentric and strange figures made out of old bedposts, broken toys and old trash which he found on his daily bicycle rides. It was as a painter and graphic artist that Heerup gained his popular breakthrough. He developed his own unique and imaginative style where the fundamental source of his narrative is ordinary life; everyday settings including love, family, children, sex, etc. This work is devoted to Heerups' own childhood, illustrating: The young Henry playing with a huge dog, riding a bike when he lost a gramophone, beaten by the schoolmaster, dressed up as a knight battling bedbugs, dancing to a street organ, sharing the Christmas porridge with a cat, climbing up onto the roof of a tram, a policeman chasing naughty boys, etc. Rare. Collectors often frame the lithographs and very few complete copies of this book have thus survived. Ref.
